Popular musician Tracy Stark is back on home ground having performed in Plettenberg Bay for the past couple of years. Tracy has returned to KZN and has already been snapped up by a number of popular venues in and around Pietermaritzburg.

Tracy made her professional debut at 16 singing and playing folk songs at the Tavern Hotel in Swaziland. Two years later, in the late 70s, she and her family moved to Johannesburg and she began performing in lots of the hotspots around town.

On moving to Kwazulu Natal in the 80s, Tracy carved a niche as a solo artist and throughout a prolific musical career she has played in numerous restaurants, hotels and clubs around the country. She has performed at hundreds of weddings, festivals and corporate events. Her range spans everything from up tempo pop and rock to easy listening and Jazz.

Tracy’s debut CD The Collection, a compilation of classic Jazz standards and contemporary pop tracks, has proven very popular with audiences. Released in July 2006, it was recorded in Knysna and produced by her husband Steve. Reflections, Tracy’s follow-up CD was released in November 2009 and features some wonderful songs like Under my Skin, Love will Keep Us Alive, Separate Lives and Hello, culminating in a haunting performance of the Fleetwood Mac piano and vocal piece Songbird. Recorded in Knysna and mixed and mastered at the Songworks Recording Studios in Hilton, this album looks set to achieve at least the same success as The Collection.

The latest release is the fantastic double CD, Live at Brookfield (Set 1 and Set 2), which was recorded in November 2009 with the re-united Jazz quartet “Me and the Guys”. It is quickly making its way into people’s CD players. Featuring Tracy on vocals, Jeff Judge on piano and keyboards, Logan Byrne on double bass and Jonathan Judge on saxophone, the album features a number of great jazz classics like Mannenberg and Take Five and standards like Cry Me a River and Masquerade. Mixed and mastered at the Songworks Recording Studios in Hilton the quality of this live CD is superb. Jeff Judge’s arrangement and Tracy’s delivery of the Joni Mitchell classic Both Sides Now is breathtaking and is also available as a CD single.

Songworks Music School

Songworks Music School and Recording Studios opened in Hilton in January 2009. Some local and KZN Midlands residents may remember that Tracy had a private music school based in Hilton for 10 years (1983 – 1993) and taught in some of the top schools in the area.

Principally Tracy does vocal training and has been a guitar teacher for over 25 years. Songworks Recording Studios are equipped to do everything from producing a 1 or 2 track CD suitable for auditions, or as a demo or personal momento, through to high end professional recordings which are digitally mixed and mastered on site.

Please feel free to telephone Tracy to chat about enrolling for lessons or any other queries you have regarding the music school.
On so many occasions I’ve heard people say that learning to sing or play a musical instrument is the one thing they regret not doing, or the one thing they wished they’d stuck to. It needn’t be so. Everyone is welcome to join.
